Sheikh Hasina calls for justice, slams electoral fraud, and state-sanctioned oppression

In her latest impassioned address from exile—delivered as Bangladesh grapples with the aftermath of the February 12 parliamentary elections—former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has unleashed a scathing indictment of the current political order.

Speaking with the fervor that once defined her leadership, Hasina dismisses the polls as a brazen exercise in manipulation, questions the legitimacy of the new government, and issues a series of bold demands: revoke indemnity for alleged criminals, lift the ban on her Awami League party, release all political prisoners, and prepare for genuine, inclusive elections.

Her words, laced with historical reverence for her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and sharp criticism of figures like Muhammad Yunus, reveal a leader unbowed, vowing an eventual return to restore what she sees as Bangladesh’s stolen democracy.

Hasina’s core allegation centers on the election itself. She mocks the reported 59% turnout as impossible, pointing to an absurd spike: after just three and a half hours of voting, only 14% had supposedly participated, yet the figure ballooned dramatically thereafter.

“Daytime voting starting the previous evening,” she quips, contrasting it with past accusations against her own administrations (2014, 2018, 2024). She accuses authorities of ongoing “corrections” to results and gazette notifications, insisting this proves industrial-scale rigging—despite international observers being paraded to certify a “good” process. If polling stations were empty, she asks pointedly, where did the votes come from?

This, Hasina argues, is no mere electoral irregularity but part of a broader pattern of lawlessness under the post-2024 interim and subsequent regime. She demands the immediate revocation of indemnity granted to those she labels “arson terrorists” and “murderers” from the 2024 unrest, calling for their prosecution. She insists the ban on Awami League activities be lifted and all detainees—political prisoners, she emphasizes—be freed without delay. These steps, she contends, are prerequisites for any credible path forward.

Interwoven with her political critique is a deeply emotional invocation of Bangladesh’s founding milestones. Hasina urges proper observance of March 7 (Bangabandhu’s historic 1971 speech, recognized by UNESCO as a world documentary heritage item and ranked among the greatest orations inspiring people over 2,500 years), March 17 (Bangabandhu’s birthday, celebrated as Children’s Day), and March 26 (Independence Day, when Bangabandhu declared independence before his arrest and eventual imprisonment by Pakistani forces). These dates, she reminds her audience, symbolize sacrifice, resilience, and sovereignty—values she accuses the current dispensation of betraying.

Perhaps most strikingly, Hasina directs her followers to take concrete action: every victim of post-2024 violence—homes burned, families destroyed—must file a case against their oppressors. “If the police station refuses, that itself becomes news,” she says. File online, in court, or via registered post—preserve the document. This serves dual purposes: to punish perpetrators and to create verifiable records for future aid and justice. “Allah will give a day,” she assures, promising support from her side for genuine victims. Without such documentation, she warns, claims of suffering risk being dismissed.

Hasina contrasts her tenure—nearly 20 years and seven months as prime minister after Khaleda Zia’s era—with the current “male prime minister” after 35 years, questioning how the country is now governed. She lambasts Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, accusing him of reversing poverty reductions she achieved (from 18% to lower rates, lifting millions to middle class) and driving six crore people below the poverty line. “Send Yunus to the museum,” she retorts, alluding to his alleged past remarks on poverty, and warns of inevitable accountability, especially for harms to women.

The speech reaches its emotional peak in decrying the erosion of respect for institutions: students and teachers assaulted, the Chief Election Commissioner slapped with a shoe, the Chief Justice handcuffed and jailed. “No manners, no rule of law, no justice—only anarchy,” she laments. Yet she remains defiant: sentenced to death in absentia, she dismisses fear, vowing, “I will return, Inshallah.” She urges scrutiny of the “Tarique-Zia era” for perspective and reaffirms her belief that she can once again deliver a better life for Bangladeshis.

As Ramadan greetings and Eid wishes close her message—”Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu, Bangladesh forever”—Hasina’s words serve as both lament and rallying cry. From exile, she positions herself as guardian of the nation’s soul, demanding accountability while promising redemption. Whether her calls galvanize action or deepen divisions remains uncertain, but they underscore Bangladesh’s unresolved wounds: a fractured polity still searching for reconciliation, truth, and a rule of law that serves all, not just the powerful.
