At 3:00am Wednesday, on DAY-16 of OCCUPY SHAHBAGH MOVEMENT, there’re many protesters to keep the place secure from all odds as they have been gathering at the Gonojagoron Moncho in numbers throughout the day and night. Many new organisations and groups of students joined the PROTEST Tuesday, when parliamentarians, social and cultural organisations also joined en masse.
A LIVE STREAM has been underway on Aljazeera website where the readers are tweeting about #Shahbagh #Shahbagh and posting comments from their Facebook accounts since the programme began at 1:30am. Due to massive support from the Bangladeshis and foreigners DEMANDING JUSTICE, the Jamaat-Shibir-BNP gangs couldn’t write or submit credible opinions! It’s good to see Aljazeera publishing a story Tuesday describing the UPRISING tit-bits and context.
The demonstrators announced release of balloons in memory of the martyrs of the Liberation War at 4:13pm on Wednesday. They also asked everyone to write a letter to the martyrs and tie it to the balloon. The Pakistan forces surrendered at that time on December 16, 1971.
All the educational institutions have been requested to sing in harmony the ‘Ekushey song’ throughout Bangladesh on Feb 21 at 3:00pm, when the protesters will hold a MASS RALLY at SHAHBAGH—the third of its kind to witness another flood of people expressing solidarity with the protesters.
With its back against the wall, Jamaat-Shibir has resorted to a smear campaign against the SHAHBAGH youths, branding them as atheists, anti-Islamic and anti-social elements with the help of a few radical Islamist groups both in and outside the BNP-led 18-party alliance. Through advertisements, reports in certain newspapers and rallies, efforts were being made to confuse people about the motive of the young organisers by tweaking religious sentiment of the people, alleged law enforcers and bloggers Tuesday.
In response, Imran H Sarker, coordinator of the movement, said, “No malevolent or hateful remarks came from the Gonojagoron Moncho against any religion, much less Islam. There is no reason for it to happen.”
Law Minister Shafique Ahmed told parliament Tuesday that the High Court judge who distributed a report among his colleagues branding the slain Shahbagh activist Ahmed Rajib Haider a ‘Murtad’ (apostate) will face constitutional action. Earlier in the day, Supreme Court lawyers and Shahbagh activists protested the act of Justice Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, who, through his assistant Siddiqur Rahman Hawlader distributed the reports in the Supreme Court envelope to the offices of the judges on Monday. Several MPs demanded action against the judge for running “propaganda” campaign against the “first martyr” of Gonojagoron Moncho after the parliament proceedings began. They demanded formation of a Supreme Judicial Council to conduct investigation against the judge. MP Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim demanded that Justice Bhuiyan be questioned for his suspected involvement in the murder. “This judge is acting for a political party. How will the people expect justice from him? How can he call someone Murtad being a judge?” Speaker Abdul Hamid asked the law minister whether any legal measures could be taken against the judge. Otherwise, the Speaker said he would give a ruling on the issue.
The judges of the High Court held several meetings on the issue and also saw the Chief Justice in the afternoon. The Chief Justice summoned the judge and warned him. Bhuiyan took oath as an additional judge on July 29, 2002 during the last BNP-Jamaat alliance government. His job was regularised on July 29, 2004.
Leaders of the coalition govt raised the demands for a BAN of JAMAAT and CAPITAL PUNISHMENT TO ALL WAR CRIMINALS again at a rally Tuesday. Those who participated were of the Awami League, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSad), Workers’ Party, Ganatantri Party, Samyabadi Dal, National Awami Party (NAP) and Communist Kendra.
In a statement in the afternoon, Jamaat said, “The main objective of the Shahbagh protesters is to root out Islam from the country. They are involved in different anti-social activities there.”
Information minister Hasanul Haque Inu said the government would not spare those who are hurting religious sentiments to create tension. According to the law, it is a punishable offence to create tension by publishing provocative advertisements. And the organisations involved in such activities would be closed down as Youtube was shut in Bangladesh following the Ramu violence. “By spreading hate contents, they are dishonouring Prophet Muhammad [SM],” Inu said, adding that a meeting will be held Wednesday to decide on the issue.
Elite force RAB Tuesday arrested Jamaat’s Rajshahi metropolitan unit chief Ataur Rahman with 20 hand bombs — eight of which are very powerful — at Kalyanpur bus stand in Dhaka. RAB say Ataur was involved in Monday’s attack at an AL in Rajshahi by Jamaat activists. In protest, Jamaat called a dawn-to-dusk shutdown in Rajshahi for Wednesday. While taking out processions Tuesday evening, they detonated several hand bombs at the city’s Sonadighir intersection during that time.
A leaked cable of the US embassy says that Jamaat, while in power, had always wanted to keep “sound relation with the US” and blamed India for favouring Awami League.
The SIX-POINT demands of OCCUPY SHAHBAGH (Gonojagoron Moncho):
1. Maximum penalty for all war criminals including Quader Molla.
2. Ensuring equal legal rights of defendant and prosecution, ensuring 3-month time limit on all trials [demands met], abolishing clemency power of the state for these trials.
3. Banning Pakistani aggressor force’s allies Jamaat-Shibir and all communal parties for resisting Bangladesh liberation and committing war crimes. Arrest immediately and bring to book the activists of Jamaat-Shibir for creating anarchy and threatening a civil war. Identify them through television footage and print media pictures.
4. Bring all the political parties, forces, individuals and organisations who are trying to safeguard these war criminals, resisting the trials and conspiring with them to justice.
5. Arrest and bring under ICT Trials all the war criminals, who were either convicted or undergoing trial till their release on December 31, 1975.
6. Ban all the business, social and cultural organisations like Islami Bank, Ibn Sina, Focus-Retina Coaching, etc. Block all the local and foreign sources of income of Jamaat-Shibir. Shutdown war criminal-owned media organisations like Diganta TV, daily Naya Diganta, daily Amar Desh, daily Sangram etc.
