Abuse of power and resignation of Nahid Islam, the chief of Yunus’ King’s party

Former adviser Nahid Islam held a press conference, flanked by the Chief Adviser’s press secretary and deputy press secretary, after resigning from his post! How?

The Interim Government’s Press Information Department (PID) released this photo!

After tendering his resignation to the chief adviser, Nahid came out of the Jamuna State Guest House in a car. Whose car is it?

Nahid didn’t submit his tax returns as an adviser as per the instruction of the chief adviser issued in September.

This is called abuse of power and nepotism and a violation of the Constitution.

The former member secretary of Ganatantrik Chhatra Shakti, Nahid is set to lead the King’s party, initiated and patronized by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus beyond the law, where most of the top leaders are from Islami Chhatra Shibir.

His resignation follows severe criticism by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who suggested that the chief adviser and the student representatives can’t float a party while holding the top positions of the interim government.

Some of his achievements as the former adviser are as follows:

Before resigning as the information and broadcast adviser, former Dhaka University student Nahid Islam patronized Islami Chhatra Shibir; violated the Constitution by making biased decisions and statements to gauge freedom of press; cancelled accreditation cards of hundreds of journalists; allowed the leaders and activists of pro-government radical Islamist groups to threaten media outlets; removed videos of his father apologizing for sexually abusing a female student; lied about his imaginary video statement calling for an armed revolution before August 5; and facilitated his father and brother to do lobbying for appointments, promotions and work orders, and capture land and properties of Awami League members in Mirpur, Rampura and Goran areas. He is also accused of taking bribes for approving a license to a new TV station.

Let’s see how much we can confirm in the days to come.

As a civil society leader, Dr Yunus gave formulas to end the political stalemate that arose over the 2007 election process and the caretaker government. He appeared in the political arena at a time when various diplomatic missions were actively engaging with the two major political parties—the BNP and the Awami League—and civil society.

After the military-backed caretaker government seized power and declared an emergency suspending the election, they urged Dr Yunus to take up the responsibility of the Chief Adviser, an offer that he rejected outright. However, he appreciated the administration’s strict actions against corruption and the restructuring of the election process to create a congenial atmosphere for democracy.

A month after the 1/11 changeover, on February 11, 2007, Dr Yunus expressed interest in joining politics; he came forward, asking the common people and his well-wishers in civil society to join him in rebuilding the nation. Very soon, he declared the party’s name “Nagorik Shakti”. After a series of discussions in the following weeks, on May 3, 2007, the Nobel laureate turned his back, citing a lack of adequate support from the people he needed to present a strong and bright alternative to the people.
