Ever since the OHCHR released its full (but incomplete and one-sided) report on Wednesday, the Bangladesh interim government has highlighted the key facts on social media from official accounts and also through the state-run news agency BSS and pro-US newspaper The Daily Star.

While the Chief Adviser’s Facebook account mentions 1,400 deaths, it falsely claims they were killed during the protests. The OHCHR reported that the deaths occurred between July 1 and August 15.

CA Professor Muhammad Yunus was a university teacher and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.

Another university teacher and the Law Adviser, Dr Asif Nazrul, did the same trick. Jihadist student coordinator Hasnat Abdullah, a student of Dhaka University’s English department, followed the suit to portray the Awami League regime as a draconian one.

Meanwhile, The Daily Star newspaper and state-run news agency BSS have also reported these deaths as of August 5.

In its preliminary report, the OHCHR said at least 400 people, including protesters, bystanders, Awami League members and police, were killed from July 16 to August 4, and 250 on August 5-6.

The Yunus administration drew severe criticism for pardoning the uprising participants for any crimes committed between July 15 and August 8, and for cancelling the judicial inquiry launched by the Awami League.

A Home Ministry order on October 14 said the students and people who actively participated in the movement and worked in favour of it during this period will not face any cases, arrests or harassment for any incidents related to the uprising.

The ministry added that all concerned have been instructed to remain extremely vigilant regarding this matter.

“They have also been warned against providing false information to gain any advantage in this regard,” it said.

Despite that, the OHCHR full report doesn’t mention Islamist extremists linked to Chhatra Shibir, al-Qaeda, ISIS and Hizb ut-Tahrir participating in the anti-government protests and mass killings post-August 5, whereas these extremists claimed responsibilities for police murders and arson attacks on 450+ police stations, using heavy weapons!

The ugliest part of the OHCHR report is that Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders collaborated with the fact-finding mission to collect data and prepare the report, as learnt from a media statement by Md Abu Shadik Kayem, former president of the Dhaka University wing. He was a key coordinator of the movement but revealed his political identity weeks after the Awami League’s ouster. Another student coordinator, Sarjis Alam, admitted having been assisted by Chhatra Shibir during the movement.

Also, Shadik Kayem in an op-ed published by the Daily Amar Desh revealed how Chhatra Shibir planned and organized violent protests and targeted attacks in Dhaka, especially at 10 points from August 3. Three days ago, the Awami League government banned Jamaat-Shibir.

Due to the poor human rights situation and lack of rule of law (Taliban-style rule) in the country since August 5, it’s clear why the full report lacks detailed information on the murder of police and Awami League members as well as minority repression.

Shadik Kayem’s status on Facebook

জুলাইয়ের গণ-অভ্যুত্থান ও আওয়ামী গণহ ত্যা আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে স্বীকৃত হয়েছে। আওয়ামী লীগ ও তার পোষা বাহিনীর বর্বর গণহ ত্যা এখন কেবল বাংলাদেশের অভ্যন্তরীণ কনসার্ন নয়, আধুনিক বিশ্বের ইতিহাসে এটি একটি কালো অধ্যায়।

OHCHR থেকে যে তদন্ত রিপোর্ট পেশ করেছে তা অত্যন্ত প্রশংসনীয়। বিশ্বের দরবারে ফ্যাসিস্ট হাসিনার নৃশংসতার দলিল তৈরি হয়েছে। এই রিপোর্টকে দল-মত নির্বেশেষে ফ্যাসিবিরোধী সকল শক্তিকে বহির্বিশ্বে প্রচার করা দরকার।

উক্ত প্রতিবেদন প্রণয়নে সকল স্টেকহোল্ডারই কোনো না কোনোভাবে যথাসম্ভব সহযোগিতা করেছে। রিপোর্ট তৈরি করার ক্ষেত্রে শুরু থেকে যুক্ত থাকার সুযোগ হয়েছিল আমার। এ কাজের অভিজ্ঞতার মধ্যে জুলাইয়ের কলেবর যে কত বিস্তৃত, কত মানুষের শাহাদাত আর আত্মত্যাগ ছিলো সেটাও উপলব্ধির সুযোগ হয়েছে।

জাতিসংঘের প্রতিবেদন প্রণয়নে প্রতিটি কাজ অত্যন্ত স্বচ্ছতা ও নিরেপক্ষতার সাথে করা হয়েছে। গণ-অভ্যুত্থানের স্টেকহোল্ডারদের কেউই অসহযোগিতা করেননি বরং যাবতীয় সহযোগিতার হাত বাড়িয়ে দিয়েছেন ধাপেধাপে। দিবালোকের মতো স্পষ্ট সত্য জেনে, বুঝেও কেবল রাজনৈতিক স্বার্থ চরিতার্থে একটি তথ্যকে মনগড়া অপব্যাখ্যায় উপস্থাপন না করে আসুন সম্মিলিতভাবে জুলাই গণহ ত্যার বিচারের দাবিতে সরব হই।
