Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that she did not allow the US to set up a base in Bangladesh to uphold the country’s sovereignty amid geopolitical tensions, like the Iran war.
“Today, just think about it once: Right now, in the ongoing war between Iran and the United States, Iran is attacking wherever the US has bases. If there were any US bases in Bangladesh—whether on Saint Martin’s Island, our Sonadia Island, Maheshkhali, or any other part of the country—those bomb strikes would have hit here too,” she said during a virtual meeting of the party recently.
“Anyone who comes to run the country must have foresight. They need to think not just about the country, but also about the region we live in—South Asia. Now everything has been sold off, leaving the country bankrupt. A nation cannot run in this state.”
She demanded the release of the party leader and workers and urged the party workers and supporters to unite. “Forget who is doing what or not. We have to come together, bring back democracy and free our imprisoned ones. That’s our demand. All prisoners must be freed.”
Criticizing the rise of Tarique Rahman as the head of the government, the five-time former premier said: “Yunus has left; one fascist is gone. Now another one has come who was convicted in the August 21 grenade attack case, in a corruption case filed during the 2007 caretaker government era, where an FBI official came and testified against him, and the 10-truck arms smuggling case. Jamaat’s Motiur Rahman Nizami, Tarique, Babar, and many others were convicted in the case.”
Regarding Muhammad Yunus, she said that those who are highly corrupt and convicted seem to have their fortunes open up—they’re the ones coming to power. Yunus deprived the workers of his own company and didn’t pay them. Five percent of a company’s profit should be deposited into the labour welfare fund, but he never did it. He didn’t pay taxes either. He was convicted by the labour court.
“Has the throne of Bangladesh become reserved exclusively for the convicts? If they stay in power, what will they give to the people of the country? They oppress and torture to silence people’s voices.
She said: “Today, hundreds of journalists have lost their jobs and lost their press cards; 38 are in jail. Even female journalists are imprisoned. Eleven journalists have been shot or killed in various ways. Lawyers have been killed. Who will file the cases? As many as 83 lawyers were arrested; only a few were released, but 63 have remained in jail for a long time. Many people are still in prison, tortured through false cases.
“And as if Awami League, Chhatra League, and Sramik League were easy targets. Whoever comes to power unleashes oppression and torture on us. One day, the darkness will fade away.”
She asked everyone to calculate how many people were in jail then, how many cases were filed, and how many were killed when the Awami League was in power for 15 years and 7 months.
“In just one and a half years, see what Yunus has done…His companions were Jamaat-BNP. Banned militant organizations like Hizb ut-Tahrir, terrorists, murderers—all were released from prison.”
Deploring the economic hardship of the poor people, Sheikh Hasina said that during Ramadan, people don’t even get the chance to have iftar or sehri properly because they have no income or livelihood. “In the Awami League era, an agricultural worker would earn enough to eat three meals and still have money left in hand. Now that’s gone.”
False charges, farcical trials, baseless verdicts
Sheikh Hasina questioned the trial process and verdicts against her, saying: “If someone is harassed and punished in false cases, that’s not the real punishment. These cases can be taken to international courts to verify how witnesses were taken, how cases were filed, and how much logic there is. They won’t be able to prove anything.”
She added that the Yunus regime said many things, including that her case would be taken to international courts.
“Wherever they went with the case, their requests were dismissed. This was an attempt to demean and defame me by saying that I killed 1,400 people.
“Have they given any list of those 1,400 people to date? They can’t show it. All those killings were done by that killer, Yunus, and his accomplices, Jamaat-BNP. That’s the reality. We didn’t kill anyone.”
Explaining the role of the police, she said that if police are attacked and burned and there are arson attacks, police will take action, go to save their companions, and try to save themselves. “When Yunus was in power, the police commissioner himself said this. Then how is there punishment again? How is there justice?”
Sheikh Hasina, the elder daughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, also demanded that if she had been tried for killing protesters while in power, then all killings during the tenures of Ziaur Rahman, Ershad, and Khaleda Zia must be judged too.
Regarding the verdicts in Purbachal plot cases, she said: “As if we made a huge mistake purchasing the 10 katha plots. My son and daughter, Rehana and her three children, have all been punished. Now, in line with this judgment, all the allocations of RAJUK plots and those sold for Tk1 can also be canceled, InshaAllah. That day will come.”

-আজকে একবার চিন্তা করে দেখুন, এখন ইরান এবং যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের মধ্যে যে যুদ্ধ চলছে, সেখানে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের যেসব ঘাঁটি আছে, ইরান সেসব জায়গায় হামলা করছে। যদি বাংলাদেশে সেন্ট মার্টিন দ্বীপ কিংবা আমাদের সোনাদিয়া দ্বীপ, মহেশখালী বা দেশের যেকোনো অঞ্চলে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের কোনো ঘাঁটি থাকতো, তাহলে সেই বোমার আঘাত তো এখানেও এসে পড়তো।
-কোনো একজন মানুষ যদি দেশ পরিচালনা করতে আসে, তাহলে তাদের দূরদর্শিতা থাকতে হবে। শুধু দেশ নিয়ে নয়, আমরা যে অঞ্চলে থাকি—দক্ষিণ এশিয়া—সেই অঞ্চলের কথাও চিন্তা করতে হবে। এখন তো সবকিছু বিক্রি করে দিয়ে দেশকে দেউলিয়া করে দিয়ে গেছে। এই অবস্থায় একটা দেশ চলতে পারে না।
-আজকে আমি দেখছি, যারা খুব দুর্নীতিবাজ, সাজাপ্রাপ্ত হয়, তাদেরই যেন কপাল খুলে যায়, তারাই আসে ক্ষমতায়। ইউনুস তার নিজের কোম্পানির শ্রমিকদের বঞ্চিত করেছিলেন, তাদের টাকা দেয়নি। একটা কোম্পানির প্রফিটের ৫% লেবার ওয়েলফেয়ার ফান্ডে জমা দেওয়ার কথা, কিন্তু কোনোদিন দেননি। ট্যাক্সও দেননি। লেবার কোর্টে সাজাপ্রাপ্ত আসামি হয়েছেন।
-ইউনুস চলে গেছে, এক ফ্যাসিস্ট গেছে। এখন আরেকজন গ্রেনেড হামলার আসামি, দুর্নীতির দায়ে এফবিআই এসে যার বিরুদ্ধে সাক্ষ্য দিয়ে গেছে এবং ২০০৭ সালের তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের আমলে মামলা করা, সাজাপ্রাপ্ত আসামি—১০ ট্রাক অস্ত্র চোরাকারবারি। জামায়াতের মতিউর রহমান নিজামী এবং তারেক জিয়া, বাবরসহ অনেকেই সেখানে আসামি ছিলেন, সাজাপ্রাপ্ত ছিলেন।
-বাংলাদেশ কি সাজাপ্রাপ্ত আসামীদের জন্যই ক্ষমতার মসনদ? এরা ক্ষমতায় থাকলে দেশের মানুষকে দেবেটা কী? এরা অত্যাচার-নির্যাতন করে মানুষের মুখ বন্ধ করে দেয়।
-আজকে শত শত সাংবাদিক চাকরি হারিয়েছে, প্রেস কার্ড হারিয়েছে, ৩৮ জন জেলে গেছে। এমনকি মহিলা সাংবাদিক পর্যন্ত কারাগারে বন্দি। ১১ জনকে গুলি করে, নানাভাবে হত্যা করা হয়েছে। আইনজীবীদের হত্যা করা হয়েছে। মামলা করবে কে? ৮৩ জনকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়েছে, কয়েকজনকে ছেড়ে দেওয়া হলেও ৬৩ জন দীর্ঘদিন কারাগারে। এখনো অনেকে কারাগারে আছে, মিথ্যা মামলায় নির্যাতিত।
-আর আওয়ামী লীগ, ছাত্রলীগ, শ্রমিক লীগ—আমরা তো আছিই। যখন যে ক্ষমতায় আসে, আমাদের ওপর অত্যাচার-নির্যাতন।
-রোজার সময় মানুষ যেন একটু ভালোভাবে ইফতার বা সেহরি খেতে পারে, সেই সুযোগটাও নেই। কারণ তাদের আয়-রোজগার নেই। আওয়ামী লীগের আমলে একজন কৃষি শ্রমিক যা কামাই করত, তিনবেলা খেয়েও হাতে টাকা থাকতো। এখন আর তা নেই।
-আমরা ১৫ বছর ৭ মাস ক্ষমতায় ছিলাম। তখন কত লোক জেলে ছিল, কত মামলা হয়েছিল, কত লোক খুন হয়েছে—হিসাব করে দেখুন। এক বছর-দেড় বছরের মধ্যে ইউনুস যা করে গেছে… তার সঙ্গী-সাথী তো জামায়াত-বিএনপি এরাই ছিল। হিজবুত তাহরীরসহ যত জঙ্গি সংগঠন, সন্ত্রাসী, খুনি তাদের কারাগার থেকে মুক্তি দেওয়া হয়েছে।
-মিথ্যা মামলা দিয়ে হয়রানি করে মিথ্যা সাজা দেওয়া হলে সেটা সাজা না। এই মামলাগুলো আন্তর্জাতিক আদালতে নিয়ে যাচাই করে দেখা যাবে—কীভাবে সাক্ষী নেওয়া হয়েছে, কীভাবে মামলা করা হয়েছে, কতটুকু যৌক্তিকতা আছে। তারা কিছু দেখাতে পারবে না।
-খুব লম্বা লম্বা কথা বলছিল—আমার মামলা আন্তর্জাতিক আদালতে নেবে। যেখানে যত আদালতে নিয়েছে, সব খারিজ হয়ে গেছে। এটা শুধু হেয় প্রতিপন্ন করা, বদনাম করানো যে, ১৪০০ লোক আমি হত্যা করেছি। আজ পর্যন্ত ১৪০০ লোকের কোনো তালিকা দিতে পেরেছে? দেখাতে পারবে না। যত হত্যাকাণ্ড, ওই খুনি ইউনুস এবং তার দোসর জামায়াত-বিএনপি এরা মিলেই করেছে। এটা বাস্তবতা। আমরা কোনো হত্যা করিনি।
-পুলিশকে মারবে, পুলিশকে পোড়াবে, আগুন দিয়ে পোড়াবে, তাহলে তো পুলিশ অ্যাকশন নেবে, তার সাথীকে বাঁচাতে যাবে। নিজে বাঁচতে চাইবে। এটাতো ইউনুস ক্ষমতায় থাকলে পুলিশ কমিশনার নিজেই বলেছে। তাহলে আবার শাস্তি হয় কীভাবে? বিচার হয় কীভাবে?
-আমি ক্ষমতায় থাকতে আন্দোলনকারীদের হত্যা করেছি—এই বিচার যদি হয়, তাহলে জিয়াউর রহমানের আমলে যত হত্যাকান্ড হয়েছিল, এরশাদের আমলে, খালেদা জিয়ার আমলে, সবারই বিচার করতে হবে।
-আমরা ১০ কাঠা জমি কিনে মহাভুল করেছি। ওই ১০ কাঠার জন্য সাজা, আমার দুই ছেলেমেয়ে, রেহানা, তিন ছেলেমেয়ে—সবার বিরুদ্ধে শাস্তি। ঐ বিচারের রায় দিয়ে রাজউকের যত জমি যে নিয়েছে, এক টাকায় যে নিয়েছে, তাও বাতিল করা যাবে ইনশাআল্লাহ। সেদিন আসবেই।
-এই অবস্থা থেকে দেশকে মুক্ত করতে হলে সবাইকে ঐক্যবদ্ধ হতে হবে। এখন কে কী করছে বা না করছে —এসব বাদ দিয়ে সবাই মিলে কীভাবে এক হয়ে কাজ করা যায়, দেশে আবার গণতন্ত্র ফিরিয়ে আনা, আমাদের যারা বন্দি তাদের সবাইকে মুক্ত করা-এটাই আমাদের দাবি থাকবে। সমস্ত বন্দিদের মুক্তি দিতে হবে। আপনারা সবাই ভালো থাকুন, সুস্থ থাকুন। দোয়া করি, ইনশাআল্লাহ একদিন অন্ধকার কেটে যাবে।
